Marty Finkel was fresh out of
medical school the first time he treated a victim of child abuse. It haunts him still.
"I was outraged," he says. Now a practicing pediatrician, Martin Finkel, D.O.,
says the experience caused him to be extremely vigilant in detecting cases of suspected
child abuse in his practice. Then, in 1982, he attended a conference on the most
unspeakable abuse of all sexual child abuse. "I didnt know about
it," he says, "I was as naive as anyone else." Once unmentionable, sexual
child abuse is now prominently featured in the media and educational materials. Is it more
common now, or just talked about more openly? Dr. Finkel and other experts dont
know, but, according to conservative estimates, half a million American children will be
molested this year . . . |
